Počet filmov a dokumentov s rockovou tematikou nie je vôbec zanedbateľný. Najmä v poslednom čase akoby sa hlavne s produkciou dokumentárnych filmov roztrhlo vrece. Sú také, ktoré za nič nestoja a po prvom zhliadnutí mi ani nenapadne sa k nim vrátiť, ale naopak existuje aj veľa tých nezabudnuteľných. Pripravila som si preto pre Vás zoznam mojich najobľúbenejších rockandrollových kultoviek, ktoré by žiadny správny fanúšik tohto žánru nemal vynechať. Dúfam, že sa pri ich pozeraní zabavíte J

The great number of movies involving rock 'n' roll just can‘t be ignored by anyone anymore. Especially for the last few years since the amount of documentaries produced has grown significantly. There are some which are not even worth watching, but on the other hand, there are many unforgettable ones. I have therefore prepared for you a list of my most favourite rock 'n' roll must sees that should not be overlooked by anyone who considers himself a true fan of this genre. I hope you‘ll have fun while watching them J

1.       Almost Famous – Na pokraji slávy

O existencii tohto filmu som dlhý čas nemala ani potuchy. Rozpráva príbeh pätnásťročného  novinára, ktorý dostane príležitosť pracovať na veľkom článku o rockovej hviezde Stillwater. Opustí tak konzervatívny domov a vydáva sa s touto kapelou na turné. Film je inšpirovaný skutočnými zážitkami reportéra Camerona Crowa s takými legendami ako The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles či Lynyrd Skynyrd. Vo filme narazíte na kopec známych hercov,  pričom jeho príbeh odohrávajúci sa v 70. rokoch, sprievodná hudba a absolútna prirodzenosť  výpovede Vás dostanú do kolien. A verím tomu, že to nebude len raz.

I didn‘t have a slightest clue about this particular movie for a very long time. It tells a story of a 15-year old journalist who gets a chance to work on a cover article about rock stars named Stillwater. He leaves his pretty conservative hometown and hits the road with the band on their tour. The movie was inspired by real life experiences of the Rolling Stone editor Cameron Crowe who toured with such legends as The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles or Lynyrd Skynyrd. I bet you‘ll recognize many familiar faces in the movie while its absolutely natural way of storytelling will hit you hard. And I believe it won‘t be just once.

2.       Roger Waters: The Wall

Ak sa medzi mojimi čitateľmi nájdu nejakí fanúšikovia Pink Floyd, za žiadnu cenu by si nemali nechať ujsť najnovší hudobný počin jedného z jeho zakladajúcich členov. Okrem toho, že film obsahuje dych berúce vizuálne zábery z trojročného koncertného turné, Waters ho obohatil aj o osobný príbeh s jednoznačným protivojnovým posolstvom. Mala som to šťastie, že som si tento poklad mohla vychutnať na plátne v kine, čo ešte viac umocnilo jeho celkovú myšlienku. Dojímavé, energické a neskutočne inšpiratívne!

If there are any Pink Floyd fans among my readers, by any means they should miss the opportunity of seeing the brand new concert film of one of its founding members! Besides the breath taking visual scenes from his live shows taken from the past world tour, Waters enhanced the movie with a personal story containing an honest anti-war message. I had a chance to see this masterpiece in a cinema and seeing it on wide screen truly intensified the experience. It’s touching, energetic and incredibly inspiring!

3.       Rock Star – Rocker

Každý rockový fanúšik si prešiel fázou, kedy mal nejakého idola. Či už to bol spevák, gitarista, bubeník alebo basák, všetci sme mali (alebo stále máme) svojich obľúbencov. Predstavte si však, že by ste dostali príležitosť nastúpiť na ich miesto a zo dňa na deň by ste sa z fanúšika  stali rockovou hviezdou. Málokto však vie, že aj film Rocker bol inšpirovaný skutočnosťou a dianím v kapele Judas Priest. Ich hudbu ale vo filme počuť nebudete. Skladby filmovej kapely Steel Dragon nahrali Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart), Zakky Wylde (Black Label Society) či Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Foreigner).

Each rock music enthusiast had to go through their phase of idolizing some artists. It could be a singer, gutarist, drummer or a bass player, we all had (or still have) our own favourites. But imagine what would happen if you got a chance to take their place and become a rock star overnight? Not everybody knows that also this movie was inspired by real events around the famous band Judas Priest. Unfortunately, it isn’t their music that features in the film. The songs performed by the movie created band Steel Dragon were recorded by Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart), Zakky Wylde (Black Label Society) and Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Foreigner) among others.

4.       The Runaways

Aby ste si nemysleli, že rocková scéna je len o samom testosteróne, s radosťou Vám predstavím skvelý film o vôbec prvej dievčenskej rockovej kapele – The Runaways. Ak Vám Kirsten Steward v Súmraku liezla už na nervy vedzte, že po pozretí tohto kúska jej dáte ešte šancu. Legendárnu Joan Jett stvárnila jednoducho perfektne, pričom jej herecká kolegyňa Dakota Fanning alias Cherie Currie vo svojej úlohe nie je o nič horšia. Magické 70. roky a ženy, ktoré už vo veľmi mladučkom veku čo sa týka rockandrollu v ničom nezaostávali za chlapmi – také boli The Runaways.

In case you thought that the rock music genre is all about testosterone, let me present you a very good movie about the very first girl rock band – The Runaways. If you hated Kirsten Stewart in her Twilight series role, know that in this movie she definitely restores her reputation as an actress. She has portrayed the legendary Joan Jett just perfectly and her co-star Dakota Fanning a.k.a Cherie Currie doesn‘t fall behind her at all. The magical 70s and women who weren’t afraid to match their male colleagues in all things pure rock 'n' roll – that‘s what The Runaways are about.

5.       The Boat That Rocked – Piráti na vlnách

Bláznivá komédia s najlepšími britskými komikmi na palube pirátskeho rockového rádia, ktorého existencia bola kvôli prísnym zákonom rozhlasového trhu ohrozená. Maximálne odhodlanie a zanietenosť členov posádky však zaručí, že to vláda s nimi nebude mať také jednoduché.  V  tejto európskej koprodukcii z prostredia 60 rokov  si môžete vychutnať boj za slobodu a za pravý rock 'n' roll!

This one is a crazy comedy starring the best British comedians who find themselves on a board of a pirate rock radio. Due to strict laws of the country broadcasting market the existence of the radio is in danger. The utmost determination and enthusiasm of the boat‘s company will guarantee that it won‘t be that easy for the government to finish them off. Watching this European co-production set in the 60s you will find yourself in the middle of a fight for freedom and for true rock 'n' roll!

6.       Tenacious D : The Pick of Destiny – Králi Ro(c)ku

Ak sa niekoho spýtate, aký je všeobecne najpopulárnejší film s rockovou tematikou, určite Vám mnoho ľudí odpovie, že sú to Králi Ro(c)ku so skvelým Jackom Blackom. Šialené dobrodružstvo dvoch super komických postáv za diabolským trsátkom osudu plné nadupaných piesní a zábavných textov zaručia, že sa pri sledovaní tejto klasiky budete neustále pučiť od smiechu.

When you ask a metal head or a rock music fan what is generally the most popular movie about rock 'n' roll, I bet that many will tell you that it’s Tenacious D with the great Jack Black playing one of the main characters. It tells a story of an insane adventure of two super funny guys in search of Satan‘s pick of destiny. The movie is full of catchy songs with ridiculously entertaining lyrics which will make sure that there won’t be a minute in the film where you wouldn’t laugh.

7.       Sonic Highways

Keď frontman Foo Fighters Dave Grohl prišiel s originálnym nápadom nahrávať každú pieseň ich posledného albumu v inom meste Ameriky, mnohí nevedeli, čo tým sleduje. Z tohto unikátneho projektu, ktorého cieľom bolo poukázať na to, ako veľmi dokáže prostredie ovplyvniť hudbu, ktorá v ňom vzniká, sa nakoniec stal jedinečný osem dielny dokumentárny seriál. Kapela sa v každej časti zoznamuje s hudobnou kultúrou vybraných miest, pričom sa v nich vždy snaží nahrať aj vlastnú skladbu. Divák sa tak postupne nielen oboznamuje s históriou hudby v Los Angeles, New Yorku, Chicagu,  Nashville či v iných mestách ale nahliadne aj do tvorby jednej z najpopulárnejších kapiel súčasnosti.

At the time when the Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl came up with an idea of recording each song of their latest album in a different American city, most people had no idea what was the point of doing so. This unique project which wanted to show how much the environment where the song is created affects its final form has been released as 8 part documentary series known as Sonic Highways. In each episode the band gets familiar with the chosen city‘s music culture and tries to compose their own track for the album. Therefore you’ll find out a lot about the history of music in for example Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Nashville and other places, but what is more you‘ll look into the creation process of one of today’s most popular rock bands.

8.       Nowhere Boy – Nanič chlapec

V prípade, že ste vždy mali radi The Beatles, mám aj niečo pre Vás. Nowhere Boy rozpráva príbeh dospievajúceho Johna Lennona a ponúka bližší pohľad na komplikovanú situáciu v jeho rodine. V  neposlednom rade môžete vo filme vidieť aj prvý kontakt s rockandrollom a počiatky jedného z najväčších fenoménov na svete. Príjemný film na nedeľné poobedie s patričnou dávkou britského humoru prekvapivo zameraný skôr na jednotlivé postavy ako na príbeh samotný. Jednoznačne má čím zaujať!

If you’re more into The Beatles than into the current rock scene, there is something for you, too! Nowhere Boy is a biographical drama about John Lennon‘s growing up and it offers a closer look into the complicated situation in his family. Last but not least you will also see his first contact with rock 'n' roll and the beginnings of what became one of the greatest musical phenomena of the world. It‘s a very nice movie for a Sunday’s afternoon spiced up with some British humour. Surprisingly it is more cantered on the individual characters than on the plot itself and definitely ranks between my must sees!

9.      Get Him to the Greek – Dostaň ho tam

Nikto mi do úlohy bláznivého rockera, ktorý má vážne problémy s alkoholom asi nesedí tak dobre ako Russell Brandt. Pointou celej komédie je dostať tento ťažko kontrolovateľný živel z Londýna na výročný koncert do Los Angeles. Takúto neľahkú úlohu dostane Aaros Green, ktorého hrá Jonah Hill. Na to, aby bol úspešný sa však najskôr musí naučiť odolávať nástrahám rockandrollového spôsobu života. Podarí sa mu to? Ak chcete poznať odpoveď tak si pozrite toto strelené pokračovanie podarenej romantickej komédie Kopačky.

To me nobody else could play a crazy rock star with heavy alcohol issues better than Russell Brandt. The plot of this movie is to get this uncontrollable force of nature from London to an anniversary gig in Los Angeles. This seemingly easy task is given to Aaron Green (Jonah Hill). But first, if he wants to be successful he has to learn how to resist all the lures of the rock 'n' roll ways of life. Will he manage? To know the answer you‘ll have to watch this wacky sequel to the popular romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

10.   God Bless Ozzy Osbourne

O tom, že je Ozzy jednou z najikonickejších postáv rockovej a metalovej hudby niet pochýb. Uvedomuje

si to aj jeho syn Jack Osbourne, ktorý sa rozhodol o kariére svojho otca natočiť tento dokumentárny film.

Ozzy sa v ňom otvorene vyjadruje k svojmu detstvu, začiatkom s Black Sabbath ale aj k sólovej kariére

či rodinnému životu. Všetko s humorom jemu typickým. Okrem neho sa však v dokumente vyjadrujú aj

iní kolegovia z brandže a spomínajú tak na spoločne strávené zážitky, ktoré si sám Ozzy ani nepamätá.

A my sa tak vďaka tomuto filmu môžeme zabávať spolu s nimi J

There is no doubt about the fact that Ozzy is one of the most iconic figures of rock and metal music. His

son Jack Osbourne is well aware of this and that’s why he decided to produce this unique documentary

film about his father’s career. Ozzy openly discusses his childhood, beginnings with Black Sabbath, his

solo career and family life. All of this with his genuine humour. But there are also other genre colleagues

that share their memories from past experiences with this rock legend that even Ozzy himself doesn’t

remember. Thank god we can hear these stories from them and have fun watching the movie J
