Graceful Metz, France

Do Metz, hlavného mesta Lotrinska som sa bola pozrieť ešte pred Vianocami. Uchvátilo ma svojim francúzskym šarmom, a preto som sa rozhodla venovať mu článok aj na blogu. Vedeli ste napríklad, že Parížske Pompiduovo stredisko moderného umenia pred pár rokmi otvorilo svoju pobočku na východe krajiny? Áno, práve v Metz. Hneď po príchode do mesta som teda zamierila presne tam. Francúzi chcú do múzeí umenia dotiahnuť čo najviac mladých ľudí, a preto ak ešte nemáte 26 rokov, vstupné je pre vás zadarmo. Lákavé, nie? 

I had a chance to visit Metz, the capital of Lorraine region right before Christmas. I was simply captivated by its French charm and decided to write about it on my blog. Did you know that Parisian Pompidou arts centre opened its branch in the east of the country? Yes, right in Metz. Arriving by train that was where I headed for first. The French want their art museums to be visited by young people and if you are under 26, the entrance fee is free for you. Quite tempting, isn‘t it?

Architektonicky nádherné múzeum ponúkalo tri hlavné výstavy: 1984-1999: Decade (venovanú životu generácie X, ktorá sa pokúša odzrkadliť ducha 90-tych rokov), Simple Shapes (rozímanie nad podobou jednoduchých tvarov v prírode, umení a nástrojoch) a Beacons (prehľad hlavných umeleckých smerov od začiatku 20. Storočia). A tak som mala možnosť vidieť originály, ktoré boli kvôli svojej veľkosti verejnosti prístupné len veľmi zriedka od takých avantgardných a moderných umelcov akými sú Picasso, Miró, Fernand Léger,  Sam Francis, Dan Flavin či Yan Pei-Ming. V žiadnom prípade nie som odbornou znalkyňou v oblasti moderného umenia ale výstavy sú podľa mňa zaujímavé aj pre úplného laika. Len si vyhraďte dosť času. Ja som tam strávila dve hodiny a to som chodila celkom svižným krokom a mnohé popisky k dielam som si ani nečítala.

Beautifully designed museum offered three main exhibitions: 1984-1999: The Decade (a portrayal of the life of generation X attempting to reflect the 90s spirit), Simple Shapes (a contemplation on the appearance of simple shapes in nature, art and tools) and Beacons (an overview of primary well-known movements in art since the start of the 20th century). The last one for example includes works of many avant-garde or modern artists such as Picasso, Miró, Fernand Léger, Sam Francis, Dan Flavin or Yan Pei-Ming. Thus I could see the original masterpieces that were very rarely shown to public due to their monumental size. Since I am no expert in the field of modern art I believe that all of the exhibitions are attractive to amateurs as well. Just keep in mind that you will need some time for that. Although I have been walking at a pretty brisk pace and haven‘t even read all the notes I still spent more than two hours there.

Prechádzkou po mestských uličkách, popri rieke či v parku môžete nájsť veľa skrytých zákutí a útulných kaviarničiek na oddych. Žiadny návštevník by však nemal vynechať do nebies týčiacu sa gotickú katedrálu sv. Štefana z 13. storočia. Čím je taká jedinečná? Jej hlavná loď patrí medzi najvyššie na svete (41,41 metrov vysoká) a jej najväčšie gotické vitrážové okná v Európe predstavujú najrozsiahlejšiu zasklenú plochu na svete (takmer 6500m²). Na vitrážach pracovali nielen gotickí a renesanční majstri ale aj umelci ako kubista Jacques Villon či modernista Marc Chagall.

Walking in the city streets, along the river or in the park you may find a lot of hidden places with nice views and cosy cafés to relax. However, no newcomer should skip the visit to the 13th century gothic cathedral of St. Stephen that is rising above the city towards the sky. Why is it so unique? Its main nave is one of the highest in the world (41.41 metres high) and its large stained windows display the largest expanse of stained glass in the world with almost 6500m². Not only gothic and renaissance master glass makers were working on the stain glass windows but such artists as cubist Jacques Villon or modernist Marc Chagall contributed with their own work, too. 

Metz by som odporučila každému, kto má aspoň trošku rád umenie (aj keď len okrajovo). Je typicky francúzske (nemecký vplyv však nemožno poprieť), šik a mieša v sebe modernosť s klasikou. Vhodné na romantické prechádzky ale aj na zábavu, nudiť sa v ňom zaručene nebudete! 

A na záver otázka, boli ste už niekedy pozrieť vo Franúzsku? Ak áno tak kde? 

I would recommend visiting Metz especially to those who are at least a bit interested in arts. It is typically French (although the German influence cannot be denied), chic and mixes the modern with the classic. Suitable for romantic walks but also for night life, you will not on any account get bored!
